Grok

Add Esment to Grok as a custom connector, and make it use your memory.

How Grok connects

Grok runs on xAI’s servers, so it connects the way other web assistants do: you give it a web address for your memory and an access key. After that it can recall and save memories in any chat.

Grok’s connector form asks only for a URL and a key, so Esment cannot set it up with one click. This page walks you through it by hand and takes about two minutes.

What you need

  • A paid Grok plan. Custom connectors are part of xAI’s paid tiers; the Custom option is not offered on the free tier.
  • A web address for your memory. Your Esment Cloud endpoint, or the temporary address from the Mac app’s tunnel.
  • An access key. Grok calls it the API key. It proves the connection is yours.
Why not localhost?
Grok dials out from xAI’s servers, so it rejects addresses like localhost or 127.0.0.1. They would point at xAI’s computer, not yours.

Get your memory address

  1. 1Open Esment and go to Assistants, then click the Grok card.
  2. 2Next to Tunnel off, click Turn on. Wait for the secure address ending in /mcp and copy it.
  3. 3Click Copy admin token. That is the key you will paste into Grok.
The address changes
The tunnel address changes when the tunnel or your Mac restarts. If Grok stops finding your memory, copy the new address and update the connector.

Add the connector

  1. 1Go to grok.com/connectors.
  2. 2Click New Connector, then choose Custom.
  3. 3Paste your memory address into the server URL field, including /mcp at the end.
  4. 4Name it Esment.
  5. 5For authentication choose API key and paste your key.
  6. 6Save. Grok connects and lists what Esment can do.

If the tools appear, you are done. Ask Grok to remember something, then ask about it in a new chat.

Why not sign in?
Grok’s sign-in option asks for a client ID and secret, which Esment does not issue. The API key is just as private.

Make Grok use memory

Connecting gives Grok the ability to use your memory, not the habit. You teach it once: in Teach your assistants on the Assistants page, click Copy & open Grok, paste the note into a new chat and send it.

That page explains the note, the usage profile and what to do if the assistant’s own memory is switched off.

If it doesn’t connect

  • “Custom” isn’t there. Custom connectors need a paid Grok plan.
  • Grok rejects the URL. It must be a public https:// address ending in /mcp, never localhost or a 192.168.x address.
  • It connects but shows no tools. Usually the key. Copy it again, with no spaces, and save the connector again.
  • It worked and then stopped. With the tunnel, the address changed: copy the new one. On the cloud, check the endpoint shows Online.
  • It connects but never recalls. Teach it as described above, or tell it a fact and try a new chat.
The troubleshooting page covers problems common to every assistant.
