Chapter I

Your team’s memory, inside Slack

Add Esment to Slack once and three things work from then on: save any message with two clicks, ask your memory by mentioning @Esment, and let it learn from the public channels you choose. Optionally, it can also post new decisions to a channel.

Answers are the memories themselves, each with where and when it came from — Esment doesn’t write prose over them, so what you read is what your team actually recorded.

Add it to Slack

  1. 1Open Integrations in your dashboard (or Integrations in the Mac app) and choose Slack.
  2. 2Click Add to Slack and approve it in Slack. If your workspace needs an admin to approve new apps, Slack asks them for you.
  3. 3Esment sends you a direct message in Slack with the three things you can now do. That’s it.

If the card says Update permissions, your install is from before Esment could answer questions. Click it and approve again — nothing you saved is lost.

Chapter II

Save a message

Hover any message, open ··· (More actions) and choose Save to Esment. You’ll see ✓ Saved to Esment, visible only to you. The message is kept exactly as written, with who wrote it and the channel it was in.

It works anywhere you can see the message — channels, threads, private channels and direct messages — because you chose that one message. It needs no AI model and costs nothing.

Ask

Mention @Esment with a question in any channel it’s in — for example @Esment what did we decide about pricing? — and it answers in the thread. Or send it a direct message to ask privately.

The answer lists up to five memories that match, each with its channel, its date and, for saved messages, a link back to the original. If it knows nothing about it yet, it says so and tells you how to teach it.

Learn from channels

In the Slack card, click Choose channels and pick public channels. Esment joins each one and posts a single message there saying it will learn from it, so everyone in the channel knows. From then on it keeps the facts from the conversation — decisions, who owns what, why something was ruled out — not the chatter.

This is the one part that uses an AI model, to turn conversations into facts. It runs on your own OpenAI key, which the card asks for right there, so the cost is yours to see. Until there’s a key, channels wait — nothing is lost, they resume where they stopped.

Updates in Slack

Click Choose channel next to Updates in Slack, pick a public channel and what to post — new decisions, contradicted facts, or deleted memories for an audit trail. Esment joins the channel and posts there itself; there’s no webhook to create in Slack and nothing to paste.

Chapter III

On the Mac

Slack connects to your workspace on Esment Cloud, because Slack has to reach a server that is always online. Your Mac sees everything Slack saves through sync, and what you save on the Mac shows up in Slack’s answers the same way. If the Slack card on the Mac shows Turn on sync, click it once.

What it can see

  • Only public channels are learned from. Everything Esment keeps from Slack is visible to everyone in your Esment workspace, so a private channel would be a leak, not a setting.
  • Only what someone chooses. A channel is learned from only after someone picks it, and Esment says so in the channel. A saved message is one message someone clicked on.
  • Facts, not transcripts. By default only the facts are kept, never the message text of a learned channel.
  • Nothing from before. Learning starts the day a channel is chosen; old history isn’t imported.
  • Undo is one click. Stop ends learning from a channel, and Disconnect deletes Esment’s stored access to Slack and its channel updates. To remove the app from Slack itself, uninstall it in Slack’s app settings.

If something doesn’t work

  • @Esment doesn’t answer. Check the card for Update permissions. In a channel, Esment must be a member — add it with /invite @Esment.
  • “Save to Esment” isn’t in the ··· menu. Slack can take a minute to show a new app’s shortcuts; reload Slack.
  • “This Slack workspace isn’t connected to Esment yet.” The app is installed but no Esment workspace claimed it — use Add to Slack from the Integrations page.
  • A channel shows 0 captured for a long time. Usually the missing OpenAI key — the card says so under the channel.

Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor can use the same memory directly. What Slack saves is there too.
