When a connection fails

The assistant does not see Esment, asks every time, or remembers nothing. Here is how to fix each.

Esment doesn’t appear

Work through these in order. The first one fixes most cases.

1Quit the app completely with ⌘Q and reopen it. Closing the window is not enough.
2On the Mac, open Assistants and check the card. Needs restart means the app has an older setup, so click Configure again. Not installed means Esment did not find the app.
3For a web assistant, check the address ends in /mcp, starts with https:// and is public.
4With the tunnel, check it says Tunnel on and that Esment is still running. The address changes after a restart, so copy the new one into the assistant.
5Check the key. Copy it again with no spaces and save the connector.

On the web dashboard, the endpoint card shows Online or Offline.
If the dashboard says your hosted endpoint is not live yet, use a local connection on your Mac for now.

Many assistants ask before using a tool for the first time. That is the assistant’s own safety feature, not an Esment setting.

Look for an option such as “always allow” on the prompt, or in the assistant’s connector settings, and choose it for Esment’s tools.
If a web assistant keeps asking you to sign in, the sign-in may have expired. Reconnect the connector once.

The exact name and place of the “always allow” option differs per assistant and changes often, so we have not listed it for each one.

If the assistant is connected but never uses your memory, it is usually because nothing taught it to, or because nothing is stored yet.

1Ask the assistant what it knows about you:
2If it never searches, teach it. Follow Teach your assistants. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok and Poke need this.
3Tell it a fact about yourself, start a new chat and ask about it.
4Open your memories in Esment to confirm the fact was saved. Each memory shows which assistant saved it.

Good to know

On the Mac, an assistant’s drawer shows Activity · 7 days. If it says the assistant never recalled, teaching it is the fix.

If nothing else works, remove the connection and make it again.

1Mac apps: open the app’s card on Assistants and click Remove, then Configure again.
2Web assistants: delete the Esment connector in the assistant’s Settings → Connectors, then add it again with the current address and key.
3Quit and reopen the app, then start a new conversation.
